Gaja Sori San Lorenzo 2004 is a full-bodied, single-vineyard Nebbiolo red wine from the Barbaresco appellation of Piedmont, northern Italy. Renowned for being the most powerful and structured of Gaja`s three single-vineyard Barbarescos, Sori San Lorenzo is an intense, brooding and exceptionally long-lived Nebbiolo which bears easy comparison with the wines of neighbouring Barolo. 1967 was the first vintage in which this iconic wine was produced. The first vintages of this wine were aged in local oak botti, with Angelo Gaja only later switching to elevage in French oak barrels. On the 2004. "The 2004 Sori San Lorenzo is a drop-dead gorgeous wine. It presents awesome balance, especially in the way it marries power with elegance. This is a remarkably refined and understated Sori San Lorenzo, with never-ending layers of dark raspberries, liquorice, grilled herbs and tar that flow from its sumptuous frame. A dark, brooding beauty, it will require several additional years of bottle at a minimum, but those with the patience to wait will be amply rewarded." Antonio Galloni, 2007

Gaja

The Gaja Winery was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja and has been owned and operated by five generations of the Gaja family. One of Italy’s most renowned and dynamic wineries, Gaja first established its world-class reputation with the powerful reds it produced in the region of Piemonte in Northwestern Italy.

A key figure was Angelo Gaja, who took over the running of the estate in 1970 and sought to showcase the best that the Nebbiolo grape could produce with stellar Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The estate produces unique white wines too, such as the marvellous single varietal Sauvignon Blanc, Alteni di Brassica.

Gaja is also a leading name in Tuscany, having diversified into the production of Brunello and Super Tuscan wines. The Gaja family have owned the Pieve Santa Restituta estate since 1994 from which they produce two single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino wines, Rennina and Sugarille. In 1996, Angelo Gaja purchased the Ca’Marcanda estate in Bolgheri.
