Tempranillo

The Heart of Rioja

The premier black grape of the Iberian Peninsula, Tempranillo is a grape that thrives in warm climates and boasts a wonderful affinity for both French and American oak, often taking on signature notes of coconut and cedar. Offering up a beautiful profile of pronounced red and black cherry and plum, it develops mushroom, earthy, forest floor complexity with age. Producing wines with warming high alcohol balanced by refreshing acidity and excellent levels of smooth tannins, these are wines that have the structure to evolve magnificently in bottle.

In Spain, Ribera del Duero and Rioja are your go-to regions for Tempranillo varietal reds, together with the regions of Castilla y Leon, Toro and Navarra. Offered as both a single varietal and also commonly blended with its fellow heat-loving companion, Garnacha. In Rioja, Tempranillo is behind the world-class wines of Aurus, Bodegas Roda, Contino, CVNE and Bodegas Sierra Cantabria to name but a few in our stellar line up. Turning to the prestigious region of Ribera del Duero meanwhile, Aalto’s PS range promises glorious reds from 100-year-old Tempranillo vines with dark intensity, sumptuous black fruit and tobacco notes. The premium winery of Pago de los Capellanes uses French oak casks to lend stunning complexity to its 100% Tempranillo single estate wine. The legendary names of Pingus and Vega Sicilia showcase the Tempranillo variety in all its concentrated and ageworthy splendour.
