Bunnahabhain distillery

Staoisha Hogshead and Wine Cask Offer

The Distillery

Founded in 1881, Bunnahabhain sits on the remote northeastern coast of Islay, overlooking the Sound of Islay and facing the Paps of Jura. Its name — meaning “mouth of the river” in Gaelic — reflects its location at the end of a winding coastal road, as far from the island’s bustle as you can get.

Traditionally known for its unpeated spirit, Bunnahabhain has long been the outlier among Islay’s distilleries. But in recent decades, a lesser-known side of its production has gained a cult following: a heavily peated variant distilled in small batches, branded as Staoisha.

This is Islay whisky in its rawest, most elemental form — bracing peat smoke, coastal salinity, and a punchy distillate strength that demands attention. It’s the kind of spirit that independent bottlers and cask enthusiasts seek out for its clarity of character and ageing potential.

For those interested in cask ownership, these Staoisha fills offer a rare opportunity to own part of Islay’s modern whisky story — with all the pedigree and provenance of Bunnahabhain behind it.

The Offer

We’re delighted to offer a parcel of 10 freshly distilled casks of Staoisha, all filled in May 2025 and available for immediate cask ownership. The parcel comprises five refill bourbon hogsheads and five second fill wine barriques, each offering a distinct maturation style. The refill hogsheads provide a classic, spirit-forward evolution, allowing the bold Islay peat and coastal distillate to shine with minimal oak influence. The second fill wine barriques introduce a more expressive dimension, with subtle red fruit, spice, and texture layered into the smoke and salinity of the spirit.

Both casks are offered with three years storage and insurance at Braeside Bond. Buyers receive full ownership rights, with the flexibility to bottle at maturity, hold long term, or sell privately. For further guidance, please refer to our Cask Ownership FAQ and read our terms and conditions here.

HED04681 / 250-litres Shipping from 7th July 2025
£2,250.00
Staoisha is the name used for heavily peated spirit produced at Bunnahabhain Distillery on Islay. While Bunnahabhain’s core range is known for its unpeated style, Staoisha offers a bolder, more rugged expression of the distillery’s maritime DNA — smoky, briny, and full of coastal character.

This refill hogshead was filled in May 2025 at a formidable cask strength of 68% ABV, with an Original Litres of Alcohol (OLA) of 165.

A powerful and expressive spirit, it holds strong potential for long-term ageing, gradually mellowing to reveal layers of earthy peat smoke, iodine, citrus peel, and sea breeze minerality. This offer includes three years of storage and insurance at Braeside Bond.

Staoisha (Bunnahabhain) Second Fill Wine Barrique
HED04682 / 225-litres Shipping from 7th July 2025
£2,250.00
Staoisha is the peated distillate from Bunnahabhain Distillery, offering a powerful counterpoint to the distillery’s usual unpeated house style. Distilled on Islay’s rugged northeast coast, Staoisha is bold and coastal, with a deeply smoky profile that captures the wilder side of the island.

This cask was filled in May 2025 into a second fill wine barrique — a rarer and more characterful choice of wood that brings a subtle fruitiness and tannic grip to the maturing spirit. Filled at 68% ABV with an Original Litres of Alcohol (OLA) of approximately 152, it promises a complex evolution. Expect robust smoke, earthy maritime notes, and hints of red fruit and spice from the wine cask influence as it matures.

This offer includes three years of storage and insurance at Braeside Bond.
