Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 2001 is a full-bodied Nebbiolo red wine from the Barolo appellation of Piedmont, northern Italy. Bartolo Mascarello is among the pantheon of great traditional Barolo winemakers. A firm traditionalist, he made just one blended Barolo wine, despite having vineyards in such prized crus as Cannubi and Rocche di La Morra. Natural fermentation without temperature control in cement vats was followed by long maturation in traditional oak botti. His wines were always intended to be an honest reflection of a single vintage. "Pale ruby with broad rim. Held-back nose, noble and perfumed, with near perfect balance between concentration and crunchy cherry fruit and integrated acidity. Morish."Jancis Robinson MW, 2011
For this first flight, I chose vintages that are ready to drink. The 2001 Barolo (magnum) has always been an enigma at this address. From magnum, the 2001 has always been better than from 750ml bottles, so it is no surprise to see this showing so well. Dense, powerful and quite rustic, the 2001 offers up dark fruit intermingled with spice, menthol, tobacco and dried flowers. This potent, old-school Barolo opens beautifully with a few hours of air. - Antonio Galloni
