Situated in Val D`Illasi within the Valpolicella region, this boutique winery was founded by Romano Dal Forno in 1983. After four decades, the family legacy continues, now led by his son Marco with Romano ever-present at his side. The 2007 Valpolicella Superiore from this estate defies the ageing process. It retains a robust tannic structure, showcasing an exuberant bouquet and palate featuring notes of flowers, sour candies, blackberries, and leather.
Dal Forno’s 2007 Valpolicella Superiore is a huge, opulent wine bursting with black fruit, bittersweet chocolate, mocha and sweet spices. The Valpolicella is usually quite tannic when young, but the 2007 stands apart from most other vintages because of its incredible silkiness. Initially quite full-throttled and intense, with time in the glass, the 2007 becomes more delicate and restrained in style. This is one of the most sensual, approachable young wines I have ever tasted from Romano Dal Forno, and that is a very good thing, as these reds are almost always impossible to enjoy when young. In 2007 there is no Amarone, so Dal Forno fans will want to check out this delicious Valpolicella. As a reminder, since 2002 the Valpolicella here has been made entirely from dried fruit, although the drying time is less than that used for the Amarone. - Antonio Galloni

Dal Forno Romano

A living legend of Verona winemaking, Romano Dal Forno has been producing showstopping Amarones and Valpolicellas since the early 1980s. A protégé of the great Giuseppe Quintarelli, Romano is renowned for his scrupulously hardworking commitment to his craft, both in the vineyard and the cellar.

The estate of Dal Forno Romano comprises 8ha of vineyards in the Val D’Illasi. The area’s loose, alluvial soils, combined with Dal Forno’s strict pruning regime, produce remarkably low grape yields. Rigorous selection during harvest then gives the raw materials for some of the most expressive Valpolicella Superiore, Amarone and passito wines in the region. Four decades on from the founding of the estate, Dal Forno Romano is still run by the family, with Romano’s son Marco in charge in the cellar and Romano himself always on hand.
