One of the most famous wines in the world, Château Mouton-Rothschild is located in Pauillac, around 30 miles north-west of Bordeaux itself. The château pioneered the idea of bottling their own wine in the 1920s while other properties were still selling and exporting in barrel. Alongside the quality of their wine, Mouton-Rothschild are also famous for their commissioning of world famous artists to create their labels with a new design featuring each year. The historic 1949 vintage was designed by Parisian painter André Dignimont (1891-1965).
The 1949 Mouton-Rothschild is a better wine than the 1948. I must admit that though this was a sound bottle, it did not reveal the spectral beauty of the previous bottle at the Four Seasons five years ago. Yet it has an entrancing bouquet, quite sensual and generous for a 1949 with those traits of graphite and delicatessen permeating vestiges of red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, extant red fruit that is precocious and maybe more like a 1947 in personality. A peacock’s tail on the finish leaves you drinking in awe. Outstanding, even if not the perfection that this Pauillac can be on its day. - Neil Martin

Chateau Mouton Rothschild

Chateau Mouton Rothschild

The prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild estate is home to the world-renowned First Growth of the same name, in addition to a second red wine, Petit Mouton and a white wine, made in smaller quantities, known as L'Aile d'Argent. Established in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, the Château pioneered the idea of bottling their own wine in the 1920s while other properties were still selling and exporting in barrel. A Second Growth until 1972, the winery was officially elevated to the high rank of Bordeaux classification in 1973 after much campaigning by the famous Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

Cabernet Sauvignon that takes pride of place in the wines of Mouton Rothschild, with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon always predominates in the Mouton red, giving the wine its rich tannins, wealth of aroma, flavour and superb ageing capacity. Meanwhile Merlot, an inseparable companion, brings suppleness, roundness and exceptional length.
