Recently promoted to the coveted spot of Premier Grand Cru Classé A, Château-Figeac is a highly regarded estate in the Saint-Émilion appellation. It is among the largest properties in the region, comprising 54 hectares in one single block, of which 41 hectares are vineyards. The 1995 vintage in Bordeaux was generally exceptional, and this applies to both the Left Bank and the Right Bank, including Saint-Émilion. The wines from this vintage have shown great aging potential and have developed beautifully over time.
The 1995 Figeac was poured from jeroboam. It has an open and slightly tertiary nose, even from large format, and is less complex than the 2001 when judged side-by-side. A touch of cola and brown spices emerge with time, but it needs to be more fully knitted together. The palate is balanced, not tremendously complex, but there is substance and sinew here, gritty tannins with sour cherries and a dash of black pepper on the finish. Maybe a bit short. Good, but not a top-class Figeac. Tasted at Château Figeac at their celebratory dinner marking the opening of the new winery.

Chateau Figeac

Chateau Figeac

Château Figeac is one of the finest producers in Saint-Émilion and is just one of fourteen properties classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) in 2012, putting it firmly in the highest echelons of the region.

Owned by the Manoncourt family since 1892, the history of this superb estate can be traced back to the Roman era and today spans 40ha. The majority of the grapes produced go into producing the celebrated first wine of the estate, Château Figeac, a classic style of Saint-Émilion with wonderful texture and tannic power. A small amount of the second wine, Le Petit Figeac is also produced.
