Owned by the Delon family since the mid-20th century, Château Léoville-Las Cases is a Second Growth wine estate situated in the Saint-Julien appellation. The property covers 98 hectares of vineyards, and the vines are situated alongside those of Château Latour, just over the Saint-Julien border. The 2021 vintage is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and just 5% Merlot, aged in 85% new barrels. It boasts a pristine and ripe centre of black fruits, intertwined with remarkably smooth and mature tannins. The bright acidity adds vibrancy, and the lingering finish is remarkably long, accompanied by a refreshing herbal aftertaste.
The 2021 Léoville Las Cases is beautifully defined on the nose. blackberry, raspberry, still that subtle marine element, a hint of Japanese wakame and shucked oyster shells. The oak (85% new) is very well integrated, though it needs some time to be completely subsumed. The palate has exquisite balance—very poised and pure. It is not a heavyweight or powerful Las-Cases, yet there is convincing tension and a judicious dab of spice toward the finish that fans out and lingers. It will require several years in bottle, but it will be worth waiting for. This has the substance to age with style. - Neil Martin

Chateau Leoville Las Cases

Chateau Leoville Las Cases

The illustrious 2ème Cru Classé property, Château Léoville Las Cases, has cemented its reputation as one of the most consistent producers of exceptional quality wines in the Saint Julien appellation in Bordeaux. Spanning 98ha, the estate produces its celebrated first wine - a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend - in addition to a second wine from young vines, Le Petit Lion. These stellar reds are renowned for their structure and longevity and are produced from the beating heart of the estate, on deep, well-draining gravel soils.

Two further wines are made from a separate site, situated further back from the river with more sandy-gravels: Clos de Marquis and Petite Marquise. The key varietals that make up these powerful red wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
