Pio Cesare Barbaresco Il Bricco 2018 is a Nebbiolo red wine from Barbaresco in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Cascina Il Bricco is a single vineyard owned by the Pio Cesare family in the village of Treiso. This wine is produced from three different plots within the vineyard. Il Bricco is located at high elevation with cooler-than-average temperatures contributing to longer maturation time and greater phenolic development of the Nebbiolo grapes. This wine was matured for 30 months in 90% large oak botti and 10% barriques, followed by six to seven months in concrete. "Lustrous mid ruby. Like an amplified version of their straight Barbaresco. Firm nose which is perfumed at the same time. Cherry with hints of tobacco leaf, iron, orange skin and cumin. Increasingly minerally with aeration. Iron and orange and a hint again of cumin. Fine-grained, long tannins carrying the supple fruit. Can be approached now, but ideally should get more time in the bottle." jancisrobinson.com, 2021
The 2018 Barbaresco Il Bricco is a worthy follow-up to the stellar 2017. Menthol, licorice, gravel, incense and a range of deeply-pitched spice notes open first, but it is the wine`s overall depth that I find especially alluring. Racy and complex, yet so refined, the 2018 has a ton to offer. Best of all, it can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. It`s a gorgeous Barbaresco that captures the essence of Treiso. - Antonio Galloni
