Roagna is a family-owned winery with a long history and deep respect for traditional winemaking practices. They are known for producing elegant and long-lived wines, and this Barbaresco is no exception. The term ‘Vecchie Viti’ means ‘old vines’, which indicates that the grapes for this wine come from older vines in the Paje vineyard, typically producing lower yields and more concentrated fruit.
The 2018 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti is graced with striking inner sweetness. The Vecchie Viti is powerful and deep, but not in an obvious way. It has more inner sweetness and also more structure than the straight Pajè, but also less overt depth, as odd as that might sound. I especially admire its freshness. It will be interesting to see how this develops in bottle. - Antonio Galloni
