Saint-Emilion
Taking its name from the nearby picturesque town of Saint Émilion, this Right Bank appellation produces red wine only, in a wide diversity of styles from young and fruity to premium quality age-worthy examples: the result of a range of different sites and soils from the limestone plateau to vineyard sites both on and at the base of the escarpment. The appellation of Saint-Émilion covers the same geographical area as the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation, but winemaking rules differ, with higher maximum yields and shorter maturation time required here. A key name to explore is Château L’If, which produces wonderful examples of modern Saint-Émilion from Merlot - Cabernet Franc blends.
