Zwack is a famous Hungarian herbal liqueur, known as Unicum in its home country. It is made from a secret recipe consisting of more than 40 different herbs and spices. The recipe was created by Dr. József Zwack, the royal physician to the Habsburg Emperor Joseph II, in 1790. The Emperor reportedly loved the taste and said, ‘Das ist ein Unikum!’ (‘This is unique!’), giving the drink its name. Zwack has a distinctive, bitter flavour and is often consumed as a digestif after meals.
