Paul Hobbs is one of the most widely respected and acclaimed winemakers in California having not only garnered a reputation for his own incredible quality wines since his inaugural 1991 releases, but also for his stints at Opus One, Peter Michael and Simi Winery. To Kalon is a single vineyard in Oakville of near mythical status and reputation for Cabernet Sauvignon. This rare large format from the 2011 vintage is a sensational release with delicious notes of crème de cassis, liquorice, spice and earth.
The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is a big, tannic wine. Like all of the 2011s here, it has aged quite well. Although the tannins are pretty imposing, I would prefer to drink any remaining bottles sooner rather than later, as the fruit is starting to fade. Blackberry, chocolate, licorice and spice lead into the brooding finish. When I first tasted the 2011 years ago, I thought the tannins would eventually soften, but they really have not. - Antonio Galloni
