Château Palmer is a Third Growth wine estate located in the Margaux appellation on the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary. The estate has been fully certified for organic viticulture since the 2017 vintage, and the vineyards are also biodynamically managed. This release is the 2020 vintage of their Grand Vin, a blend of 48% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. The 2020 vintage in Bordeaux was marked by challenges, including an early bud break, frost risks, and summer heatwaves. Despite these challenges, many wineries managed to produce excellent wines, demonstrating the resilience and adaptability of the vineyards and winemakers.
The 2020 Palmer has a relatively straightforward nose, more austere than its peers—not in a negative way, just reserved and a little leafier. The palate is overtly sweet, almost candied on the entry, with a very concentrated orange zest and marmalade sorbet-like quality. This is perhaps missing a little Margaux DNA on the finish, but it is still very attractive. Returning to it after ten minutes, there is structure and persistence. It is interesting how, tasted blind, the Grand and _Deuxième Vin) are so close together, but I am certain this will pull away with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Chateau Palmer

Chateau Palmer

Château Palmer is a 3ème Cru Classé property and is one of the most celebrated estates in the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, renowned for producing rich and opulent wines with exceptional longevity. The 55 hectare estate is characterised by its mixture of fine and sandy gravels, together with clay soils. The key grape varieties are old vine Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, all farmed biodynamically, resulting in superbly elegant, velvety wines with a wonderful capacity to age and evolve in bottle.

In addition to the first wine, Château Palmer, the estate produces a second red from specific plots, Alter Ego de Palmer. Created to be as equally terroir-driven and expressive as the Grand Vin, the Alter Ego is supple, rounded and more approachable in youth.
