Although born and bred in Rioja, Álvaro Palacios is one of the Spanish winemakers credited with putting Priorat back on the viticultural map. In 1990 he set up his own winery after stints of working at both Pétrus in Bordeaux and Stags Leap in California. While ‘Les Terrasses’ is, in fact, one of his more `entry level` releases, it well justifies its price tag. The wine is made from equal proportions of old vine Garnacha and Carignan, grown on some of the steepest sites around the village of Gratallops. On the nose, expect notes of stewed red fruits, cherry pie, dates, liquorice and a touch of aniseed. The palate is smooth and vibrant, with refined tannins and a mouth-coating texture.
