Les Astéries is an exclusive 1.2-hectare vineyard with vines that boast an impressive age of up to 80 years. This property, under the ownership of Jonathan Maltus, is situated just 100 meters away from his Le Carré vineyard and the neighbouring Clos Fourtet. The 2019 vintage is a blend composed of 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc, with an ABV of 14.6%. The wine delivers an intriguing interplay between lush, concentrated fruit and underlying chalky, mineral nuances that provide a delightful contrast. Additional layers of complexity emerge through hints of chocolate, spice, and savoury elements.
The 2019 Les Astéries is the one cuvée from Jonathan Maltus that has closed down a little, though it will open up with bottle age. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, pliant and focused, displaying a touch of black pepper toward the finish and quite a persistent aftertaste.
