Latour à Pomerol 1970 is a fully mature, Merlot-based red wine from the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux. Château Latour à Pomerol is one of the leading Pomerol properties and is now run by Jean-Pierre Moueix of Pétrus and Trotanoy fame. This fully mature example of the property`s grand vin is from the stand-out 1970 vintage. "This wine has always offered an opulent, rich, concentrated, glorious mouthful of Pomerol. Although there was considerable amber at the edge, this bottle exhibited loads of fruit, as well as a sweet, glycerin-dominated mid-section. With a complex, truffle, coffee, mocha, chocolatey, black-cherry-scented nose, this exotic, fat, ripe Latour a Pomerol remains one of the vintage`s great successes." Wine Advocate, 1996
The 1970 Latour à Pomerol is a bottle that I bought in Burgundy for a sum that meant there was no hesitation “popping it into my shopping trolley”. This was less turbid than the Lafleur. Vibrant black fruit, a touch of sous-bois and brine, it is not complex, but there is vivacity after half a century. The palate is a little rustic, yet there is decent depth, and it coheres over 90 minutes. Almost Left Bank in style with cedar and tobacco emerging on the elegant finish, you might think there is more Cabernet in the blend than is planted in the vineyard. This is an unpretentious Pomerol with another decade of pleasure to give. - Neil Martin
