Gaja Conteisa 2008 is a medium-to-full-bodied Nebbiolo red wine from the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Produced from grapes within the cru village of Cerequio, on the border between Barolo and La Morra, Gaja Conteisa has been produced since 1996. It takes its name from the Piedmontese term for `contested`, alluding to the historical rivalry between the towns of Barolo and La Morra over the coveted Cerequio cru. This is a medium-to-full-bodied Nebbiolo now at its peak, with concentrated floral aromas and classic Nebbiolo tar, cherry and earth. Direct and long on the palate, this is a polished Nebbiolo from one of the finest Langhe producers.

Red
Piedmont, Italy
The 2008 Conteisa is a knock-out. It boasts the most striking inner sweetness and perfume imaginable, a quality shared by a handful of legendary Piedmont wines. Juicy red cherries, spices, hard candy and mint caress the palate in this extraordinary, breathtaking wine. The balance of aromatics, fruit, acidity and structure are simply captivating. The 2008 is of course far too young to deliver maximum pleasure, but it is impossible to miss its pedigree. This is a fabulous showing from Gaja. Conteisa is often outstanding, but the 2008 will go down as one of the great all-time vintages for this wine. Conteisa is made from Gaja`s plots in the Cerequio vineyard of La Morra. - Antonio Galloni

Gaja

The Gaja Winery was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja and has been owned and operated by five generations of the Gaja family. One of Italy’s most renowned and dynamic wineries, Gaja first established its world-class reputation with the powerful reds it produced in the region of Piemonte in Northwestern Italy.

A key figure was Angelo Gaja, who took over the running of the estate in 1970 and sought to showcase the best that the Nebbiolo grape could produce with stellar Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The estate produces unique white wines too, such as the marvellous single varietal Sauvignon Blanc, Alteni di Brassica.

Gaja is also a leading name in Tuscany, having diversified into the production of Brunello and Super Tuscan wines. The Gaja family have owned the Pieve Santa Restituta estate since 1994 from which they produce two single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino wines, Rennina and Sugarille. In 1996, Angelo Gaja purchased the Ca’Marcanda estate in Bolgheri.
