Clos de l`Oratoire is a prestigious Grand Cru Classé wine estate located just 2km northeast of Saint-Émilion town. It is one of the properties owned by Stephan von Neipperg who is also at the helm of Châteaux Canon la Gaffelière, d`Aiguilhe and La Mondotte. The 2019 vintage is a blend of 81% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc, aged on the lees for 16 months. It’s a medium to full-bodied expression, with polished tannins, no hard edges and a remarkable finish.
The 2019 Clos de l`Oratoire has a Left Bank-inspired bouquet with cedar-infused red fruit, fine delineation, quite backward but nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, quite saline, and nicely balanced though it needs to develop a little more precision on the finish. It does not reach the level just after bottling, but a decent showing. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. - Neil Martin
