Barbaresco Ovello Cascina Morassino 2021 is crafted from Nebbiolo grapes sourced from meticulously tended, 20-year-old vines. The vineyard practices sustainable agriculture, ensuring low yields of 2 kg per vine to maintain quality. Harvest involves a selective process, focusing on the ripest grapes. The wine undergoes controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks, lasting 7-8 days, followed by two years of maturation in 25 hl French oak barrels. Cascina Morassino, a small family-run winery, reflects a commitment to traditional winemaking in one of Italy`s most esteemed regions.
The 2021 Barbaresco Ovello is packed with black cherry, plum, licorice, mocha, spice and leather. This is an especially somber, potent Barbaresco from Ovello, where the wines are usually brighter. Even so, there's enough acid, structure and overall freshness to balance some of the wine's more overt leanings. I find the Ovello a bit imposing for my palate, but it is a very fine Barbaresco, just the same.
