Vieux Château Mazerat is a small 5-hectare Bordeaux estate owned and operated by JCP Maltus. The 2018 is a rich, Merlot-dominant blend (65%), with the remainder Cabernet Franc. Spiced dark plum character is accompanied by mocha and liquorice notes, leading to a wonderfully long finish. Sold in approachable half bottle.
The 2018 Vieux Château Mazeret is exotic on the nose, especially in the context of the vintage, presenting very ripe, brash scents of black cherries, violets, dates and flecks of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet opening, black cherries intermingling with hoisin and touches of brown spice. It wrests back some control toward the finish, but there is a sense of dryness that concerns me. - Neil Martin - The 2018 Vieux Château Mazerat is laced with inky dark fruit, chocolate, graphite, blackberry jam and cloves. This is an especially flamboyant style, but there is plenty of energy, too, and that makes for a compelling Saint-Émilion loaded with personality. Like all of the wines in Jonathan Maltus' range, Vieux Château Mazerat is exuberant, but it is more medium in body and less overtly juicy than the top selections.
