Timo Mayer is a maverick winemaker making miniscule quantities of wonderfully terroir-driven wines from single vineyards in the Yarra Valley, Victoria. The Close Planted Pinot Noir comes from a small portion of the Bloody Hill vineyard where vines are just 75cm apart. Never afraid of a bit of funk or stalky savouriness, he includes 50% whole bunches and ferments only using natural yeasts. The 2018 is incredibly bright and juicy, with wonderful notes of sweet-sour cherry, wild herbs, rose hip tea and gravelly minerality. This is a captivating wine with wonderful subtlety of structure and delightful tension through the finish.
