Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1990

Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1990 is a full-bodied red wine from the Napa Valley region of California. Spottswoode Estate was created in 1882 but it was only a century later in 1982 that Mary and Jack Novak released their first Cabernet Sauvignon. Since that inaugural vintage they have cemented a reputation as once of the finest producers in California, renowned for their incredibly high quality and remarkably consistent Bordeaux blends. This is the flagship wine and is their ultimate expression of Cabernet Sauvignon from their organically farmed estate vineyard. "1990 was the first vintage (4,756 cases produced) and one of the most abundant before the replanting became essential because of phylloxera, and was again made at Robert Pepi. However, the percentage of Cabernet Franc jumped to 10% in the final blend. Mia Klein, who worked with Tony Soter, was part of the winemaking team. This wine performed beautifully, and had that Château Margaux-like finesse, elegance and richness. Beautiful blackcurrant notes, graphite, rose petal and liquorice, were all present in this deep ruby/plum-coloured wine that came across like a Napa version of a first-growth Médoc.
