Created in 1994 by Manfred and Elaine Krankl, Sine Qua Non is probably the most famous of all the California cult wineries and is renowned for exceptionally limited quantities of wines made from the classic Rhône Valley varieties. The 2012 Stein Grenache is a blend of 76% Grenache, 16% Syrah and 8% Mourvèdre from the Cumulus and Eleven Confessions Vineyards and was aged for 22 months in mostly used French oak.
Initially the Grenache and Syrah were named ‘Sticks’ and ‘Stones’, however another winery objected and so they changed the name to the German equivalents.
