Situated in Wairarapa, Schubert is a New Zealand winery founded by Kai Schubert and Marion Deimling in 1998. The Block B Pinot Noir is crafted from 100% destemmed grapes, undergoing a cold maceration and fermentation in stainless-steel vats, with an extended skin contact of 3–4 weeks. It matures in French barriques [45% new] for 18 months. The wine exhibits a gentle, nuanced, floral fruit profile, concluding with a dry, herbal finish that unfolds with genuine charm along the way. Certified organic.
- The 2020 Pinot Noir Block B is on form. What I like about this vintage is the balance that Kai Schubert's wines clearly demonstrate. It has composure and focus. While flowing easily across the mid-palate, it maintains its shape and freshness. There's a sense of persistence and drive on the long, dry and savory finish. This is certainly not a fruit-forward NZ Pinot Noir; it's about structure and texture and it will take some time to come around.
