Picaro del Aguila Clarete 2020

HED38598 75cl 14%
Traditionally produced in Ribera del Duero, `Clarete` is produced from a mixture of red and white grapes that are aged in barrel. Grape varieties (a filed blend of old vines) include Tempranillo, Garnacha, Bobal and Blanca del País. Whole bunches are co-fermented together and then direct pressed into barrels. Aromas of smoke, quince, cinnamon and balsamic amongst the red fruit and berries. With the freshness of a white and the structure of a red, it even has ageing potential.

Dominio Aguila

Dominio Aguila

In contrast with the high-alcohol, super-concentrated wines with which Ribera is typically associated, Aguila prizes elegance and restraint in its wines – all made made from carefully selected old-vine plots of Tempranillo, Blanca del País, Bobal, Garnacha, Albillo and Tempranillo Gris. All are farmed organically or biodynamically.

The domaine’s reserva, made from a plot of vines more than 100 years old and aged for 35 months in old French oak, is a masterpiece in concentration with restraint. Also look out for the clarete – an extraordinary barrel-aged rosé-coloured wine made with co-fermented white and red grapes. This traditional style of wine in northern Spain had been largely forgotten in Ribera del Duero until Jorge campaigned to have it recognised in the appellation.
