Jayson Pahlmeyer planted his vineyard in 1981 using “suitcase clones” allegedly smuggled from France. His founding philosophy was to create a “California Mouton” and has undoubtedly secured his winery’s reputation as one of the finest producers of Bordeaux varieties in Napa. The 1996 Proprietary Red is a wonderful wine composed of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with lesser parts Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. It is full-bodied, ripe and expansive, with notes of crème de cassis, mocha, prune, exotic spices and cigar smoke.
