Based in the Black Forest region of Germany, Schwarzwald Distillers is the home of the popular Monkey 47 Gin brand. Launched in 2010 as a handcrafted, batch-distilled gin, Monkey 47 is named with reference to the 47 handpicked plant ingredients which, combined with the especially soft water of the Black Forest, give Monkey 47 its special complexity and quality.
Monkey 47 is inspired by the eccentric British airman Montgomery Collins, and is said to have the “power to unite great British traditions, the spices of India, and the rich landscape of the Black Forest”. Collins lived as the son of a diplomat in India and after his RAF career made a home for himself in the Black Forest. This provided the autobiographical background for Schwarzwald Distillers’ recipe for Monkey 47, which unusually combines Black Forest herbs and berries, and exotic Asian botanicals.
