Alvaro Palacios is undoubtedly one of the most important winemakers in Spain and his pioneering efforts in Priorat have helped secure the regions reputation for being able to produce fine wines of profound character and quality. L’Ermita is his flagship wine and it is a blend of 85% Garnacha with lesser parts Cariñena and Cabernet Sauvignon from a single plot of 70-year-old vines. Deep and inky in hue, the 2005 release is blessed with a heavenly bouquet of black cherry, wild red berries, fennel and earth. Remarkably refined and perfectly balanced, the palate is deeply expressive and complex, culminating in an extraordinarily long, mineral-infused finish. Though ready to drink, this will continue to evolve for at least another 10-15 years.
- Bright ruby. Powerful cherry and dark berry aromas display a brooding, deeply concentrated character, slowly revealing exotic floral and Indian spice qualities. Sharply focused, palate-staining red fruit flavors deliver uncanny power as well as finesse. Finishes with stunning focus and thrust, leaving mineral-drenched red fruits in its wake. An utterly remarkable wine that bears a shocking price tag.
