Le Petit Cheval 2020 is a full-bodied Cabernet Franc-based red wine from the St-Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. The second wine of the renowned St-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) property Château Cheval Blanc, Le Petit Cheval 2020 is composed of 59% Cabernet Franc and 41% Merlot. The wine accounts for 12% of total production at the property. "I wrote in my note on the 2020 Château Cheval Blanc Le Petit Cheval that this is "one hell of a second wine," and it has a kiss of the elegance and complexity found in the top cuvée. Black fruits, roasted herbs, graphite, and scorched earth notes all emerge from this ruby/purple-hued beauty, which has medium to full-bodied richness, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. It will drink nicely for 15+ years." Jeb Dunnuck, 2023
The 2020 Le Petit Cheval was cropped at 35hl/ha and includes no Cabernet Sauvignon, which is in the Grand Vin. It represents only 12% of total production, as 17% is sold in bulk. It has an intense nose with blackberry, black olive compote and subtle estuarine scents. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and a slight creaminess developing with aeration. There`s modest depth, and a touch of dark chocolate appears towards the finish. This is a delicious Deuxième Vin that will need three to five years to give years to coalesce. - Neil Martin

Chateau Cheval Blanc

Chateau Cheval Blanc

With a history dating back as least as far as the 16th century, Château Cheval Blanc is considered by many to be one of the finest estates in Bordeaux. Located on the Right Bank in the celebrated Saint-Émilion appellation. One of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine, the estate has three main soil types: clay, gravel and sand. Red grape plantings are made up of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot and are used to produce wines with marvellous aromatics, with floral and smoky nuances, aged 100% in new oak.

In addition to the highly-coveted first wine, the estate produces a second red wine, Le Petit Cheval which made its first appearance in the 1988 vintage. A white wine, known as Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is also made, produced from predominantly Sauvignon Blanc together with a smaller percentage of Sémillon.
