Latour 1978 is a mature-vintage Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine from the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. Château Latour is one of the oldest Bordeaux wine producing properties in the appellation of Pauillac and has a history dating back to the 14th Century. It was classified as a First Growth in 1855 and is widely regarded as one of the most consistent of all the elite châteaux, with a reputation for wines of remarkable longevity. On the 1978. "A sleek and racy wine. Ruby-amber colour. Aromas of cedar, cigar box, tobacco, mint and mushrooms, with hints of red fruits, follow though to a medium body with fine tannins and a long, silky finish." Wine Spectator, 2000
The 1978 Latour, served from ex-château double magnums, is a wine that I have encountered several times over the years. Of course, provenance plays its part, likewise the large format, yet I remain unconvinced that this is a top-flight Latour. At least the bouquet is fresh with cedar and pencil lead aromas, commendably detailed considering the era in which it was born. The palate is fully mature, with firm, almost obdurate tannin. The 1978 cries out “old school Pauillac,” with a touch of brine emerging towards the finish that has a distinct rustic edge. It tries to impress more than confer enjoyment upon the drinker. Perhaps now just past its prime, since bottles a decade ago seemed to offer more. Tasted at the Académie du Vin dinner in Bordeaux. - Neil Martin

Chateau Latour

Situated on the Bordeaux's Left Bank in the appellation of Pauillac, this superb First Growth is produced from the estate's 92ha of vines, spread across 138 plots, (47 hectares of which are located in renowned 'L'Enclos'). The clay and gravel soils give superbly concentrated, textural Cabernet Sauvignon dominant reds, with Merlot and smaller percentages of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc making up the blend.

The estate also produces two further celebrated reds, Les Forts de Latour and Pauillac de Latour. Certified organic since 2018, biodynamic techniques are also used in the vineyard.
