Lafleur 2008 is a mature-vintage Right Bank Bordeaux from the appellation of Pomerol. Château Lafleur is a small property located opposite the legendary Château Pétrus - and to many Bordeaux aficionados this property produces wines of similar magnitude to its illustrious neighbour. Extremely low yields in the vineyard and a minimalist approach in the cellar produces wonderfully expressive wines with a seductive perfume (partly attributable to the high proportion of Cabernet Franc in the blend). Lafleur is typically a blend of 50/50 blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged in 50% new barriques for 18 months. "The 2008 Lafleur is a wine that I have tasted several times. It mirrored my previous encounters. There is still impressive fruit concentration on the nose, equally distributed between red and black, a hint of clove and just a touch of Italian delicatessen emanating from the Cabernet Franc. The palate has just melted a little since its obdurate infancy, although it is still quite linear and "strict". You might argue that the 2008 Lafleur is a little charmless at the moment, but bottle age will sculpt and abrade this Pomerol into a very fine, if slightly aloof wine." Neal Martin, 2018
Tasted with Baptiste Guinaudeau, the 2008 Lafleur is a wine for which I have a lot of time, and as it approaches a decade old, it is beginning to loosen up a little. There is plenty of fruit on the nose—more than I have encountered on previous bottles, with a mixture of red and black fruit—and a hint of bell pepper and sage. The main difference is that those previously rigid tannin have loosened their collar in recent months; therefore, this Lafleur is now entertaining the notion of drinkability. There remains a linearity to this Lafleur—and there is still that backbone—yet it seems to flow nicely across the mouth, and there is superb mineralité on the finish. It`s probably destined to be overshadowed by the succeeding two vintages, but I suggest you do not overlook the 2008 Lafleur. - Neal Martin

Chateau Lafleur

Chateau Lafleur

Château Lafleur has come to be recognised as one of greatest producers in Pomerol, offering wines of incredible balance, purity and elegance, with distinct mineral character. A stand out name for Bordeaux's Right Bank, the estate also produces a second red, Les Pensées de Lafleur, produced from a 0.68ha plot with its own distinct terroir - resulting in a lighter, more fragrant style compared to the Lafleur.

Despite both wines being classic blends of Cabernet Franc and Merlot with 20% new oak, the result is two quite different expressions: for example the the dominance of cigar-box and graphite Cabernet Franc complexity in the Lafleur.
