Château Lafite Rothschild is the largest of the First Growth estates, covering nearly 112 hectares. Approximately 70% of the vineyards is dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon, while Merlot occupies 25%, Cabernet Franc 3%, and Petit Verdot 2%. This particular release is a remarkable treasure from the 1955 vintage, a year that gave rise to Bordeaux wines with enduring concentration. It is worth noting that 1955 was also the year when the inaugural Saint-Émilion classification was unveiled.
- The 1955 Lafite-Rothschild is more pale in color than the 1962 with a wide brick rim. The bouquet is understated but refined, with strawberry punnet and Morello scents, laced with crushed rose petals and pencil shavings. Light tannins on the palate for sure, but the acidity is pitched just right and it seduces with its comeliness and feminine guile on the finish. The 1955 Lafite lacks the arching structured of the Latour and therefore I recommend that this fully mature Lafite-Rothschild should be consumed over the next decade. Tasted at the Lafite-Rothschild dinner at Amuse Bouche in Hong Kong.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild

Chateau Lafite Rothschild

A highly-coveted First Growth from Pauillac, the estate boasts a fascinating history that can be traced back as far as 1234. Spanning 110 hectares, Château Lafite Rothschild produces a legendary first wine, Lafite Rothschild, showcasing beautiful aromatics and an extraordinary capacity to age; a superb second wine, Carruades de Lafite, and Légende de Pauillac.

Located at the northerly boundary of Pauillac, adjacent to Saint-Estèphe, the Château vineyards are broadly split into two parcels - one which supplies the bulk of the grapes for the Grand Vin and a second parcel that is used to produce Carruades de Lafite. Vineyard plantings are around 70% Cabernet Sauvignon 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
