Château La Tour Haut-Brion was a Bordeaux wine estate from the Pessac-Léognan appellation, which was ranked as a Cru Classé for red wine. The estate`s final vintage was 2005, after the owners – Domaine Clarence Dillon – decided to discontinue the label. This is a rare bottle from the 1964 vintage, which produced some very good quality wines capable of long ageing.
The 1964 La Tour Haut-Brion replicates the showing from the solitary other bottle I tasted with Jacques Thienpont some years ago in Ekithove. This bottle is looking its age with wide bricking and a tuile core, though it simply looks its age. At first pour, the aromatics are a little feeble and diffuse, yet afforded an hour to open and aerate, it develops exquisite scents of red fruit, red brick/gravel and undergrowth. The palate is no blockbuster, yet it has balance and a sense of brightness or éclat (as the French call it). The 1964 is very focused, with lots of sous-bois dominating the finish, though I would never describe it as dry after six decades. As I suggested before, it`s not a long runner, so feel free to open bottles in the near future. Tasted at Hedonism`s Bordeaux tasting in London. - Neil Martin
