Since the Frey family (also owners of Jaboulet in the Rhône Valley) assumed control of Château La Lagune at the turn of the millennium, the wines produced at this Grand Cru Classé Haut-Médoc estate have seen a massive increase in quality and consistency. The 2000 displays ripe fruit with floral notes carrying though on a medium bodied palate.
The 2000 La Lagune was the first vintage to use a sorting table. It has a clean and expressive bouquet with redcurrant jam and raspberry preserved mixed with gravel and tobacco scents, nicely defined if not overly complex. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, tightly wound black fruit tinged with tar and sea salt, leading to a structured and rather “square-jawed” finish that would have benefitted from more flesh. Tasted at the La Lagune vertical at the château. - Neil Martin - Good medium ruby. Blackberry, espresso and spicy oak on the nose. Pliant, fairly rich flavors of black fruits and licorice. Finishes with lush tannins, a note of melting Valrhona chocolate and good length.
