Château La Garde is one of the finest wine producers in the Pessac-Léognan appellation but slightly under the radar. The estate, which has been owned by Maison Dourthe since 1990, boasts a vast vineyard of 50 hectares located on a superb gravel ridge. The 2019 vintage is a blend of 52% Merlot and 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 14 months in oak barrels, 30% new. The wine displays an elegant aroma profile, including black fruit and graphite notes. On the palate, the fruit attack gives way to a chalky minerality and cooling minty finish.
The 2019 La Garde comes across rather oaky on the nose, occluding the terroir expression and freshness. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine grip, just a little chewy and forced towards the finish. Doesn't need to try this hard. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.
