Highland Park 20 Year Old Single Cask 1494 is an age-statement single malt whisky produced at the Highland Park Distillery on Orkney. Selected by Master Whisky Maker Gordon Motion as part of Highland Park`s Single Cask Series, this rare beauty of an island single malt was matured for 20 years in a single first-fill, sherry-seasoned European oak butt in March 2003 and tipped on 21 March 2023. Just 564 bottles were filled. Producer note. "Bearing all the hallmarks of Highland Park’s uniquely complex balance of sweet and smoky flavours, this whisky displays beautifully deep and autumnal russet hues, driven entirely naturally by the cask it matured in. Enticing aromas of dried strawberries, peat-smoked oranges, aromatic cloves and crumbled brown sugar are followed by deliciously rich notes of fruit streusel dusted with cinnamon, and infused with delicate peat smoke. Spicy and lightly smoky notes linger at the finish, with just a hint of freshly cut wood."

Highland Park

Arguably one of Scotland's most famous 'island distilleries' and certainly one of the most remote, Highland Park is situated on Orkney in the Shetlands. Established in 1798, the distillery sources peat from their own heather moorland and water from Cattie Maggie's spring, the same source they have been using for over 200 years. Highland Park still operate their own floor malts, which provide around 20% of the barley they require for whisky-making, and operate two wash still and two spirit stills.

The spirit is bold and complex with a whiff of wood char and a dense, barley-forward, honeyed character. The 12 year old and 18 year olds are considered classic malts by many whisky lovers, while single vintage releases and special editions sell quickly to collectors. Independent bottlings are rare, but worth seeking out.
