Henri Giraud Argonne 2016 is a vintage Champagne produced by Henri Giraud the Äy region of Champagne. Henri Giraud is a long-standing Champagne house currently run by 13-generation descendant Emmanuelle Giraud-Patour. The house owns approximately 10 hectares of vineyards, mainly planted to Pinot Noir on chalk soils, while it also sources fruit from selected growers. Cuvée Argonne represents an harmonious fusion of the remarkable terroir of Aÿ and the oak trees from the Argonne forest. Sourced from two parcels, ‘Les Valnons’ for the Pinot Noir and ‘Croix Courcelles’ for the Chardonnay, both situated in the heart of Aÿ, this blend undergoes vinification in new oak barrels from the Argonne forest. The result is a champagne boasting remarkable aromatic intensity and unparalleled complexity. "This is a powerful but elegant wine with a wealth of citrus-fruit freshness, blood orange and grapefruit, as well as toast, dried citrus blossom, white lavender, clove, cardamom and spices. Tense and driven, with so much mineral freshness and focus. Very tight bead of bubbles. Endless finish. This will age incredibly well, but you are want to drink it right away." James Suckling, 2024

Henri Giraud

The Giraud-Hémart family have cultivated grapes in the Champagne region since 1625. Based in Äy, the family only started to produce wine for themselves in 1990. The current owner of the house is 12th-generation Claude Giraud. His son, Emmanuelle Giraud-Patour manages the company while his son-in-law, Sébastien Le Golvet, is the chef de cave.

Henri Giraud’s top cuvée, Fût de Chêne, is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with a smaller proportion of Chardonnay, using the ‘Petit Pinot’ clone of Pinot Noir which has been grown solely in Aÿ since 1804. Meanwhile the new Esprit Nature cuvée is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with Chardonnay and 50% reserve wine, with maturation taking place in small casks and ovoid vats. Production at Henri Giraud is limited to just 250,000 bottles a year – a remarkably small number in comparison with the Grandes Marques, which dictates that demand is always high.
