Greywacke Wild Sauvignon Blanc 2022 is a medium-bodied white wine from the Marlborough region of New Zealand. Greywacke was created in 2009 by renowned winemaker Kevin Judd and quickly cemented its reputation as a producer of benchmark Marlborough Sauvignon. The winery takes its name from the prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones – a sedimentary rock widely found in Marlborough - in the soils of the estate vineyard. On the 2022 Wild Sauvignon Blanc. "This Sauvignon Blanc has aromas of shortbread, quinces and apricots, lemon zest and ginger, honeysuckle and vanilla bean – a delicious, sweet-scented fragrance of ripe fruit and Asian spices infused with a tarragon-like herbal thread and a faint whiff of wood smoke. Fermented entirely with naturally occurring yeast, this is an alternative style of Sauvignon Blanc that is both intricate and textural with a rich, succulent palate finishing crisp and long with a flinty dryness." The 2022 Wild Sauvignon is always sensitively constructed, standing out as one of the most successful whites of this tricky vintage. Wild fermented in barrel and left on lees for 11 months, this is layered, detailed and textured. It may not have the intensity nor persistence of the superlative 2021 vintage, but it does have a delightful mid-palate feel and fine linearity. The 2022 is nuanced and aromatic, with flavors of blackcurrant, nectarine and white flowers combining with flinty reductive notes and nutty characters. I can see this improving with some bottle age, but I'd happily drink it now.
