De Wetshof Bateleur Chardonnay 2021

HED93860 75cl 13%
A single-vineyard Chardonnay produced by De Wetshof Estate in the Robertson Valley of South Africa. The wine is named after the bateleur eagle, which is a rare and majestic bird of prey found in Africa. The grapes for the Bateleur Chardonnay are grown in a single vineyard that was planted in 1987. The vineyard is located on a south-facing slope, which provides the grapes with plenty of sunlight and warmth. The soil in the vineyard is a combination of clay and loam, which helps to retain moisture and nutrients. The wine is made in a traditional style, with fermentation taking place in stainless steel tanks and aging in French oak barrels. The wine is not fined or filtered, which preserves its natural flavours and aromas.
- The 2021 Chardonnay Bateleur comes from a northwest-facing parcel planted in 1987 with a small proportion of clay soils. It has quite a floral nose with pressed white flowers infusing Golden Delicious and orange pith scents, the oak neatly subsumed. The palate is well-balanced with tropical notes on the entry - passion fruit, pineapple and grapefruit. This has a very appealing waxy texture and fine extract, lending complexity on the finish. Worth seeking out.
