Restless River Ava Marie Chardonnay 2021 is a medium-bodied, single-vineyard white wine from the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley of South Africa. Established in 2004, Restless River is a boutique winery nestled in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Its humble beginnings trace back to the garage of Craig and Anne Wessel, and over time, the operations expanded to a farm shed to accommodate increased production needs. Despite this growth, Restless River maintains its essence as a small-scale, truly artisanal estate. This Chardonnay comes from a single 2-hectare vineyard, planted in 1999 at 260m on granite and deep underlying clay. "The 2021 Ava Marie is whole bunch, pressed and matured partially in Amphorae for 12 months. It takes a little while to open, revealing candlewax, pressed white flowers, and orange pith notes with aeration. The pallet is slightly granular on the entry, just a faint, underline oatmeal note, with fine tension and a little chalkiness towards the finish. Lots going on here. An absorbing Chardonnay."
