The name of Clos du Marquis, created in 1902, was inspired by the Petit Clos adjacent to the Château de Léoville, residence of the Marquis de Las Cases. Though now owned and produced by the Delon family, it is often referred to as the “second wine” of Leoville Las Cases, however, it is a separate cuvée made from vineyards that are entirely different. The 2005 is a lovely wine now approaching peak maturity and offers a wonderfully classic expression of Saint-Julien.
- The 2005 Clos du Marquis is in a very attractive place today. Time has softened the tannins nicely, allowing the wine's radiant personality to really shine. Sweet tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and dried cherry are all laced together in this expressive Saint-Julien. There is a bit of rusticity here, but all the elements are well balanced just the same.
