One of just four elite properties bestowed with the status of Premier Grands Crus Classé (A), Château Cheval Blanc is considered by many to be one of the elite producers of St-Émilion. Following the incredible release of 2000, the 2001 Cheval Blanc may seem a somewhat tamer affair, but it surely delivers no less drinking pleasure. A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, it is alluring and expressive, with sublime definition, texture and length. The benefit to 2001 is that it can be drunk and enjoyed now whilst you wait another 10 years for the 2000 to hit its peak.
- The 2001 Cheval Blanc has a slightly more expressive and less feral bouquet compared to the 2000, perhaps better defined, although I miss the menthol aspect that develops on the previous vintage. But give it an hour's aeration and it coheres magnificently, gaining more intensity as it manifests dark berry fruit mixed with potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, quite firm and (for this estate) quite austere and strict, though yet again, after an hour it mellows, gaining more rondeur and sensuality. Whereas initially I leaned toward the millennial Cheval Blanc, the 2001 has its nose in front by the end. Tasted at Cheval Blanc.

Chateau Cheval Blanc

Chateau Cheval Blanc

With a history dating back as least as far as the 16th century, Château Cheval Blanc is considered by many to be one of the finest estates in Bordeaux. Located on the Right Bank in the celebrated Saint-Émilion appellation. One of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine, the estate has three main soil types: clay, gravel and sand. Red grape plantings are made up of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot and are used to produce wines with marvellous aromatics, with floral and smoky nuances, aged 100% in new oak.

In addition to the highly-coveted first wine, the estate produces a second red wine, Le Petit Cheval which made its first appearance in the 1988 vintage. A white wine, known as Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is also made, produced from predominantly Sauvignon Blanc together with a smaller percentage of Sémillon.
