Cheval Blanc was effectively created in 1832 when a portion of the vineyards belonging to Chateau Figeac were sold off to M. Laussac-Fourcaud. Given the highest possible rank in the appellation, Premier Grands Crus Classe (A), Cheval Blanc`s Cabernet Franc-heavy blend is considered by many to be the pinnacle of winemaking in France. The annual production hovers around the 6,000 case mark.
The 1978 Cheval Blanc replicated previous showings of this wine. The bouquet is now ferrous and spicy, the fruit having receded, still with that quite alluring Moroccan spice note that I observed back in 2015. The palate is medium-bodied and finely balanced, modest amounts of tobacco-infused black fruit with a slightly rustic, maybe hard finish that leans towards the Left Bank. It might lack the core of fruit many desire in this Saint-Émilion but those who enjoy classic Right Bank wines from this era will find much to like. Tasted out of magnum at a private dinner in Bordeaux.

Chateau Cheval Blanc

Chateau Cheval Blanc

With a history dating back as least as far as the 16th century, Château Cheval Blanc is considered by many to be one of the finest estates in Bordeaux. Located on the Right Bank in the celebrated Saint-Émilion appellation. One of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine, the estate has three main soil types: clay, gravel and sand. Red grape plantings are made up of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot and are used to produce wines with marvellous aromatics, with floral and smoky nuances, aged 100% in new oak.

In addition to the highly-coveted first wine, the estate produces a second red wine, Le Petit Cheval which made its first appearance in the 1988 vintage. A white wine, known as Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is also made, produced from predominantly Sauvignon Blanc together with a smaller percentage of Sémillon.
