Run by successive generations of the Avril family, Clos des Papes has a long and illustrious history of producing exceptional quality wine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Though 90% of production is red, 10% is reserved for white wine, with the debut of the ‘Blanc’ arriving in 1955. It is a blend of roughly equal parts Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Picpoul, vinified and aged in stainless steel for 6 months. From the low-yielding yet excellent 2018 vintage, this is rich, round and silky, with intense notes of orange citrus, blossom, stone fruits and honey. An excellent wine to drink whilst young with meaty white fish such as turbot.
