Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli Il Poggione 2004

HED93015 75cl 14.5%
Labelled simply as `Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva` until vintage 2003, Il Poggione Riserva Vigna Paganelli Brunello di Montalcino is a single-vineyard Sangiovese from one of the most revered estates in Tuscany. It is only produced in exceptional years from fruit sourced exclusively from the `I Paganelli` vineyard, planted in 1964. Founded in the 1800s, Il Poggione has been owned in the Franceschi family for five generations. The estate`s reputation for producing some of the best wines in the region was cemented by former winemaker Pierluigi Talenti (1958-1999). Talenti was succeeded by Fabrizio Bindocci, who was in turn succeeded by his own son, Alessandro. The new winery was built in 2004. "The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli has also developed impeccably. Dark, ample and broad, the 2004 is built on a core of serious power. Layers of dark stone fruits, leather, spice and tobacco build into the rich, intense finish." Vinous, 2016

Il Poggione

Il Poggione’s stellar reputation for producing fine, long-aged Brunellos is down to the skilled and highly experienced winemakers who have managed the winery cellars: Pierluigi Talenti from 1958 until his death in 1999, ably followed by Fabrizio Bindocci (also the president of the wine consortium Brunello di Montalcino DOCG) and, from 2005, Fabrizio’s son Alessandro.

In the cellar, traditional winemaking prevails, with the use of a submerged cap (the grape solids which rise to the surface of the vats during fermentation) and frequent pumpovers preferred to maximise extraction and ageing conducted in large French oak casks. The standard Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino is matured in cask for three years before a further period of bottle age before release. The estate’s Riserva bottling, which is only made in exceptionally good vintages, spends an additional year in cask.
