Giacosa Barolo Rocche del Falletto Riserva 2004 is a full-bodied, single-vineyard Nebbiolo red wine from the Barbaresco appellation of Piedmont, northern Italy. Available here in magnum format. From 1961 until his death in 2018 Bruno Giacosa was behind some of the most celebrated vintages of Barolo and Barbaresco ever produced, and his famous red-label wines from these appellations have deservedly achieved iconic status. Only produced in exceptionally good vintages, the Le Rocche del Falletto Riserva is the pinnacle of the estate`s production. "The 2004 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto is off the charts. Sweet roses, menthol, tar, liquorice and minerals come together in a sensual, elegant style that recalls Giacosa`s legendary 1989 Riserva Collina Rionda, a wine many observers (this one included) place at the top of the hierarchy of all-time legendary Barolos. Ripe, sensual, and utterly spellbinding, the 2004 Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto offers superb elegance and pedigree. At this stage the wine remains surprisingly accessible. Readers will want to taste the 2004 Rocche as soon as possible as it will almost certainly head for a long period of dormancy in the near future. This magical Barolo will likely merit a perfect score in the future. The 2004 Rocche is the last wine Giacosa and former longtime oenologist Dante Scaglione produced together from start to finish and it is an appropriate bookend to a wonderful partnership that yielded so many profound wines." Antonio Galloni, 2010
The 2004 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto is simply as profound as wine can be. Period. Strikingly layered, perfumed and sensual to the core, the 2004 has it all. Next to the straight Falletto, the Rocche is more refined but also quite a bit more backward as well. Mint, rose petal and melted road tar grace the exquisite finish. The level of intensity here is simply mind-blowing. At ten years of age, the 2004 Rocche is a youngster, but it is clearly a wine of divine inspiration. For readers who look at the numbers, the score is the only possible score.

Bruno Giacosa

Bruno Giacosa

Born in 1945, Bruno Giacosa began working at his father's wine cellar at the age of 16. Without formal training, Bruno rose to become one of Italy's greatest winemakers, producing some of Piedmont's most iconic reds. Producing both Barolo and Barbaresco, Bruno focussed heavily on sourcing fruit from the finest crus in the area. The estate only began building up vineyard holdings in the early 1980s and today have around 20 hectares under vine.

Bruno passed away in 2018 and since then the winery has been managed by his daughter Bruna who continues the traditional of careful winemaking and terroir-focussed grape selection. Since 2012 the winery have produced Barolo and Barbaresco entirely from estate-grown fruit. In extra special vintages a red-label Reserva is bottled, representing the very peak of fine Piedmontese winemaking. The purity of the fruit is the primary concern the team at Giacosa, ageing takes place in large, untoasted inactive barrels for around 20 months.
