Pira is a historic vineyard in the village of Castiglione Falletto and the vines for this wine are between 25 and 50 years of age. The 2016 release is aromatic and pretty with a wonderful tannic structure that is approachable now but will age gracefully. There are lovely notes of berry fruit, dark spice, leather and wild mint.
The 2016 Barolo Pira is a gorgeous, complex wine endowed with terrific depth and tons of nuance that continues to open over time. Light on its feet and yet wonderfully deep, the 2016 has so much going on. Kirsch, sweet red cherry, spice, orange zest, menthol and spice fill out the layers effortlessly. Young Barolo tannins are present, but there is plenty of richness in the fruit to keep things in balance. The Pira is absolutely stellar in this tasting.
