Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cerretta 2010 is a full-bodied Nebbiolo red wine from the Barolo appellation of Piedmont, northern Italy. The Giacomo Conterno estate, now run by grandson Roberto, is one of the most illustrious in Piedmont and many consider their wines to be the ultimate expression of Barolo. This particular release comes from the Cerretta cru, a slope with south-east exposition on soil of marl and clay, with a high limestone content. "This shows such power and richness, yet it remains polished and silky. Deep from the beginning, on the nose there are mushrooms, some sweet tobacco, opulent dark fruit, meat, black olives and earth. It`s full-bodied, dense and surrounded by ultra-refined tannins. Goes on for minutes. This is the first Barolo from here and will only be bottled in 2,000 magnums. From 20-year-old vines bought in 2008. It`s a beautiful wine to taste now but will be so much better in 2017 and onwards." 100 points, James Suckling, 2014
A much more overt, powerful wine, the 2010 Barolo Cerretta races across the palate with explosive fruit and tons of pure, unbridled energy. The Cerretta is an immediate, voluptuous wine with so much fruit that the tannins of the vintage are nearly buried. It will be fascinating to see how Conterno’s 2010s age. The Cerretta is shaping up to be magical. Bottled only in magnums. - Antonio Galloni

Giacomo Conterno

Giacomo Conterno

Founded in the 1920s, Giacomo Conterno is an iconic Piedmont estate currently owned and operated by Roberto, grandson of winery founder and namesake. Giacomo was assisted by his brother Aldo Conterno for many years before Aldo left to establish his own eponymous winery, pursuing a different style of winemaking altogether.

Along with Gaja and Bruno Giacosa, the winery is considered to be one of the premier producers of fine Barolo. Cascina Francia and Monfortino (only made in select vintages and aged for up to seven years before release) are Conterno's top wines when it comes to Nebbiolo, but the team also make excellent Barbera a'Alba. The Nebbiolo are traditional expressions of the Piedmont terroir in many ways - long-lived and earthy with an elegant savoury character to match alluring ripe red and black fruit notes.
