Troplong-Mondot 1990 is a full-bodied, Merlot-based red wine from the St-Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. Château Troplong-Mondot is a Bordeaux producer ranked as Premier Grand Cru Classé [B] in the Saint-Émilion classification, which was updated in 2022. After more than 80 years in the hands of the Valette family, the property was purchased by French insurance firm SCOR in 2017, who appointed Aymeric de Gironde as its director. On the 1990 grand vin. "A fabulous example, the 1990 Troplong Mondot is only equaled by such recent vintages as 2000, 2005, and 2008. The inky/garnet/plum/purple-colored 1990 exhibits notes of coffee, blackberries, licorice, camphor, and espresso. Rich and full-bodied with lavish fruit, high glycerin, low acidity, and stunning purity." Wine Advocate, 2009

The 1990 Troplong Mondot has been highly rated in the past, although I have been troubled by recent showings. This is one particular wine why Antonio and myself will have to agree to differ! I have encountered this particular vintage three times over the course of 12 months, twice served blind, and on all three I noticed too much volatility on the nose that obstructed the fruit and terroir expression. Thickly lacquered fig and boysenberry jam, hints of prune – it just feels excessively heavy. The palate is again, quite volatile, like a dinghy rolling from side-to-side, unable to settle and find its balance. It was a hedonistic thrill in its youth but I would be wary opening a bottle as it reaches 27 years old. Tasted twice, both blind, at a private dinner in Bordeaux. - Neil Martin - The 1990 Troplong Mondot has been highly rated in the past, although I have been troubled by recent showings.
